Maldives Seaplane vs Speedboat: Which Transfer Is Best?

Hotel transfers aren't usually the part of a holiday we get excited about, but in the Maldives, they really are part of the experience.

Forget long coach journeys or sitting in a taxi after your flight. With hundreds of islands scattered across the Indian Ocean, reaching your resort usually means travelling across the water or taking to the skies.

Some Maldives resorts can only be reached by speedboat, while others require a seaplane. For some islands, you may even have a choice between the two.

So, what is each experience actually like?

Speedboat

The whole experience is wonderfully easy. Once you arrive at Malé Airport and collect your luggage, you'll be met by your resort representative and shown where to go. The speedboat jetty is just outside the airport, so it doesn't take long before you're out on the water and heading towards your island.

For me, this is the moment the Maldives holiday really begins.

After a long flight, there is something lovely about stepping onto the boat, feeling the warm tropical air and watching Malé disappear behind you. Then it's time to sit back and enjoy that first journey across the Indian Ocean while waiting for your resort to appear on the horizon.

Speedboats are operated by individual resorts, so they come in different styles and sizes, but the journey itself is all part of the arrival experience.

Depending on where your resort is located, you'll pass other islands along the way. Some are resort islands, some are local islands and others are tiny, uninhabited patches of tropical paradise that look like they belong on a postcard.

Keep an eye on the water, too. You may even be lucky enough to spot dolphins along the way.

There is something quite special about approaching your resort from the sea. At first, you see a tiny line of palms in the distance. Then the island slowly gets closer, and you begin to make out the beach, villas and jetty.

It's a very different way to arrive on holiday.

Seaplane

Then there is the seaplane, and this is an experience in its own right.

After arriving at Malé Airport, you'll take a short transfer to the seaplane terminal before continuing your journey to your resort.

Seaplanes in the Maldives are small, usually carrying around 15 passengers, and you may be travelling with guests staying at several resorts in the same area. Sometimes the plane will stop at another island first, which simply gives you another incredible Maldives arrival to watch before continuing to your own resort.

Once you take off, you'll quickly understand why people talk so much about the seaplane experience.

The views are spectacular.

Looking down, you'll see tiny green islands surrounded by rings of white sand, bright turquoise lagoons, coral reefs and the deeper blue of the Indian Ocean. As you fly higher, you really begin to appreciate the incredible shapes and scale of the Maldivian atolls.

It's one of those occasions when you'll probably spend the entire journey looking out of the window.

Then comes the landing.

Rather than approaching a traditional runway, the seaplane comes down directly onto the water close to your resort. One minute you're flying above the Indian Ocean, and the next you're floating beside a tiny tropical island.

It really does feel like you've arrived somewhere very special.

One thing to remember is that seaplanes operate during daylight hours, so international flight times can be important when planning your journey.

Speedboat or Seaplane?

I don't think there is a wrong choice.

The speedboat gives you that wonderful feeling of travelling across the Indian Ocean and watching your island slowly appear in front of you.

The seaplane gives you a completely different perspective, with those incredible aerial views of the islands, lagoons and reefs before landing on the water beside your resort.

Sometimes, the location of your island will decide for you, as many resorts have a specific transfer type.

And occasionally, you can experience both, with different transfer arrangements possible in each direction.

Whichever way you arrive, the journey from Malé to your island is much more than simply a hotel transfer.

It's your first proper glimpse of the Maldives and, for many people, one of the most memorable experiences of the holiday.
