Best Family Hotels in Mexico: My Top Resorts for an Unforgettable Family Holiday
Updated: Sep 9
Mexico is one of my favourite destinations to recommend for families, and it’s easy to understand why.
Beautiful Caribbean beaches, warm weather, fantastic all-inclusive resorts and some of the best family facilities you’ll find in the long-haul market make Mexico
an excellent choice for families travelling from the UK.

The Cancun and Riviera Maya coastline is particularly good for families. Resorts here can feel like destinations in their own right, with waterparks, kids’ clubs, multiple swimming pools, entertainment, sports and an incredible choice of restaurants. And when you want to explore beyond the hotel, you have cenotes, Mayan ruins, eco-parks and Caribbean islands within reach.
But choosing the right resort matters. Some hotels are brilliant for younger children, others are much better for teenagers, and some are ideal for families who want a more luxurious experience without sacrificing the fun.
Here are some of my favourite family hotels in Mexico.
Best Family Hotels in Mexico
1. Moon Palace The Grand Cancun

Best for: Luxury families who want absolutely everything
If you want a family resort where it would be genuinely difficult to get bored, Moon Palace The Grand Cancun should be high on your list.
This is a huge, high-end all-inclusive resort with an enormous amount going on. Families have access to pools, fantastic dining, entertainment and an impressive waterpark, making it particularly good when travelling with children of different ages.
One of the biggest attractions is the sheer choice. You can have a lazy pool day, spend hours at the waterpark, enjoy activities with the children and still have plenty for adults to look forward to in the evening.
It is more expensive than many Mexican family resorts, but for families looking for a special holiday, it delivers a lot.
Why families love it:
• Fantastic waterpark and family facilities
• Excellent choice of restaurants
• Multiple pools
• Great facilities for older children and teenagers
• High-quality all-inclusive experience
• Plenty of entertainment and activities
My verdict: One of my top choices for a special family holiday to Mexico, particularly if you have older children or teenagers.
2. Moon Palace Cancun

Best for: Families wanting the Moon Palace experience at a lower price
Moon Palace Cancun is another fantastic option and can often offer better value than staying at The Grand.
The resort is enormous, with plenty of pools, restaurants, activities and entertainment. It works particularly well for families who enjoy a lively resort and want lots happening throughout their holiday.
It’s worth understanding the difference between Moon Palace Cancun and The Grand before booking, particularly when it comes to facilities and access, as the right option can depend heavily on your children’s ages and what you want from the holiday.
Why families love it:
• Huge resort with plenty to do
• Excellent all-inclusive offering
• Multiple restaurants and pools
• Good choice for families with different-age children
• Lots of activities and entertainment
• Often better value than The Grand
My verdict: A great all-rounder and one I regularly consider when families want a premium Mexico holiday without moving into the higher price bracket of The Grand.
3. Royalton Splash Riviera Cancun

Best for: Waterpark-loving families
The clue is in the name!
Royalton Splash Riviera Cancun is designed with families in mind and is a particularly good choice if a waterpark is high on your children’s wish list.
The resort combines modern accommodation with a large choice of activities, pools and family entertainment. There is enough happening to keep energetic children occupied while parents can still enjoy the feeling of being at a Caribbean resort.
It’s also a good option for families with older children who may have outgrown smaller splash parks and basic kids’ clubs.
Why families love it:
• Large on-site waterpark
• Multiple swimming pools
• Kids’ and teens’ facilities
• Modern rooms
• Lots of activities and entertainment
• All-inclusive dining and drinks
My verdict: One of the first resorts I would look at for a family who tells me, “The kids want slides!”
4. Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya

Best for: Active families and teenagers
Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya is a brilliant option when you need a resort that works just as well for older children as it does for adults.
There is a lively atmosphere, lots of entertainment and plenty happening throughout the day. It is particularly worth considering for families with teenagers who may not be interested in traditional children’s clubs but still want activities and entertainment.
The resort combines the fun factor with a premium all-inclusive experience, making it a strong choice for a special family holiday.
Why families love it:
• Excellent for older children and teens
• Waterpark facilities
• Lots of activities
• Lively entertainment
• Wide choice of food and drink
• Premium resort feel
My verdict: A particularly strong choice for families travelling with teenagers.
5. Iberostar Selection Paraíso Maya Suites
Best for: Families wanting a beautiful resort with excellent facilities
Iberostar is a name I frequently recommend for family holidays, and the Paraíso complex on the Riviera Maya offers a great combination of beautiful surroundings and family-friendly facilities.
Iberostar Selection Paraíso Maya Suites has a grander, more luxurious feel than many traditional family resorts while still providing plenty for children.
The wider resort area is extensive, so this is a good choice if you enjoy having lots to explore without needing to leave the hotel every day.
Why families love it:
• Beautiful resort setting
• Family-friendly pools
• Kids’ activities• Good dining options
• Spacious resort
• Excellent balance between family fun and relaxation
My verdict: A great choice when parents want a beautiful resort just as much as the children want activities.
6. Sandos Caracol Eco Resort
Best for: Nature-loving families
Sandos Caracol offers something quite different from the classic luxury Cancun resort.
Set among lush tropical surroundings, the resort has a strong nature and eco focus. Children can experience wildlife and outdoor activities alongside the usual pools, beach time and entertainment.
There is also a waterpark, making it an especially interesting choice for families who want plenty for the children to do without spending the entire holiday around a swimming pool.
Why families love it:
• Waterpark
• Tropical natural setting
• Wildlife and nature experiences
• Family activities
• All-inclusive
• Lots for younger children to discover
My verdict: One of the more distinctive family resorts in the Riviera Maya and a great choice for adventurous children.
7. Dreams Natura Resort & Spa

Best for: Families wanting modern all-inclusive luxury
Dreams Natura Resort & Spa combines a contemporary resort feel with plenty of family fun.
This is a good choice for parents who want a stylish, higher-end all-inclusive holiday but also need enough activities to keep the children entertained.
There are pools, children’s facilities, entertainment and activities, while adults still have plenty of opportunities to relax and enjoy the resort.
Why families love it:
• Family-friendly all-inclusive concept
• Water features and activities
• Kids’ club
• Teen facilities
• Modern accommodation
• Good choice of restaurants
My verdict: A lovely balance between a fun family resort and an adults-friendly luxury holiday.
8. Dreams Playa Mujeres Golf & Spa Resort

Best for: Families wanting a more luxurious, relaxed atmosphere
Playa Mujeres is one of my favourite areas to consider when families want the Cancun experience but prefer something a little more relaxed.
Dreams Playa Mujeres is an excellent family resort with a premium feel, beautiful pools and plenty for children to do.
It’s particularly suited to families who want excellent children’s facilities but don’t necessarily want the non-stop atmosphere of one of Mexico’s enormous mega-resorts.
Why families love it:
• Beautiful Playa Mujeres location
• Excellent family facilities
• Kids’ and teens’ clubs
• Pools and water activities
• Premium all-inclusive experience
• Great for multigenerational holidays
My verdict: A fantastic choice for families wanting luxury and family facilities in equal measure.
9. Dreams Aventuras Riviera Maya

Best for: Families wanting a smaller, easier-to-navigate resort
Dreams Aventuras Riviera Maya is a lovely option for families who like the quality and family-friendly approach of Dreams Resorts but don’t necessarily want to stay in one of Mexico’s enormous mega-resorts.
Located in the gated Puerto Aventuras community on the Riviera Maya, it offers a more manageable resort experience while still providing the benefits families look for from an all-inclusive holiday.
There are swimming pools, children’s activities and entertainment, while parents can enjoy the beachfront setting, restaurants and more relaxed atmosphere.
Its location is another advantage. Puerto Aventuras is well placed for families who would like to explore more of the Riviera Maya rather than spending every day inside the resort.
Why families love it:
• More compact and easy to navigate
• Beachfront setting
• Kids’ club and family activities
• Teen facilities
• All-inclusive dining and drinks• Great base for exploring the Riviera Maya
My verdict: A great Dreams option for families who want plenty of facilities but prefer a smaller, more relaxed resort environment.
10. Grand Palladium Kantenah Resort & Spa

Best for: Families who love large tropical resorts
The Grand Palladium complex is another excellent choice for families who enjoy having a huge resort to explore.
The tropical surroundings are beautiful and the wider complex offers a substantial range of pools, restaurants, activities and entertainment.
It can work particularly well for families who don’t want to feel confined to one small hotel for 10 or 14 nights.
Why families love it:
• Huge tropical resort complex
• Plenty of pools• Family activities
• Kids’ clubs• Excellent restaurant choice
• Lots to explore
My verdict: A great option for longer stays when having variety within the resort becomes especially important.
Which Area of Mexico Is Best for Families?
For most of my family clients travelling from the UK, I concentrate on Cancun, Costa Mujeres, Playa Mujeres and Riviera Maya.
Cancun is convenient and lively, with relatively easy airport transfers and a huge selection of resorts.
Costa Mujeres and Playa Mujeres are excellent if you want newer resorts and a slightly more peaceful feel while remaining within easy reach of Cancun.
Riviera Maya is fantastic for families who want to combine a resort holiday with exploring. You are well positioned for cenotes, eco-parks and Mayan sites, although transfer times can be longer depending on the hotel’s location.
Cancun or Riviera Maya With Children?
There isn’t one answer that suits every family.
If you’re travelling with very young children, I often favour a shorter airport transfer and a resort with everything conveniently located.
With older children and teenagers, Riviera Maya can be brilliant because you can combine resort days with some incredible experiences outside the hotel.
For a first family holiday to Mexico, either can work extremely well. The important thing is matching the hotel and location to your family rather than simply choosing the resort with the best reviews.
When Is the Best Time to Visit Mexico With Children?
Mexico is a year-round destination, but the weather and prices vary considerably throughout the year.
Christmas, Easter and the main UK school summer holidays are naturally among the most expensive periods, so booking early can make a substantial difference, particularly for larger families or if you need a specific room type.
For families who aren’t restricted to school holidays, travelling outside peak periods can offer excellent value.
If you are tied to school holidays, I recommend looking as soon as flights and packages become available. The most popular family rooms and better-value options can disappear long before the departure date.
Is All Inclusive Worth It in Mexico?
For a family resort holiday, I think Mexico is one of the destinations where All Inclusive can offer particularly good value.
Many of the larger resorts include far more than just meals and drinks. Depending on the hotel, your package may include entertainment, children’s clubs, sports, activities, waterparks and multiple à la carte restaurants.
For families, it also makes budgeting much easier.
That said, not all All Inclusive hotels are equal. Restaurant restrictions, reservation systems, premium drinks, room categories and access to sister-hotel facilities can vary enormously.
This is where choosing the right resort becomes important.
How Long Should You Go to Mexico For?
From the UK, I generally prefer 10 to 14 nights for a family holiday to Mexico where the budget allows.
Seven nights can still work, particularly if you find an excellent direct-flight package, but Mexico is a long-haul destination and there is so much to enjoy that a longer stay often feels more worthwhile.
Ten or eleven nights can be a very good compromise between price and holiday length.
And surprisingly, always check different durations. Dynamic package pricing means that occasionally a longer holiday can cost very little more, or can even work out cheaper, than a shorter stay.
My Tips for Booking a Family Holiday to Mexico
Don’t choose on star rating alone. Look carefully at the children’s facilities, room occupancy, location and what is actually included.
If a waterpark is important, check exactly what “waterpark” means. There is a big difference between a splash area for young children and proper slides that will entertain teenagers.
Check children’s ages carefully when comparing prices. Hotel age policies can have a significant impact on the total cost, particularly once children reach their early teens.
For families of five, start looking early. Rooms genuinely designed for two adults and three children are much less common than standard family rooms for four.
And if you want a swim-up room, family suite or interconnecting
accommodation during the school holidays, I recommend planning well ahead.
Let Me Find the Right Mexico Family Holiday for You
There are hundreds of hotels along Mexico’s Caribbean coast, and the “best” family hotel isn’t necessarily the most expensive one.
The right choice depends on your children’s ages, budget, departure airport, preferred dates and what matters most to your family.
You might want a huge waterpark and non-stop entertainment. You might prefer a luxury beachfront resort with an excellent kids’ club. Or perhaps you need one room that will comfortably accommodate a larger family.
This is exactly where I can help.
I specialise in family holidays and affordable luxury, including Mexico, the Caribbean and other long-haul destinations, and I can compare suitable packages and resorts based on your individual requirements.
