WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT?
When is the best time to visit the Dominican Republic?

December to April
December through April is generally one of the most popular periods for Dominican Republic holidays. Conditions tend to be drier, with plenty of sunshine and comfortably warm temperatures.
It is also peak season, particularly around Christmas, New Year and Easter, so prices can be higher and the most popular resorts can book well in advance.

May to November
The warmer and wetter part of the year can offer excellent value. Tropical showers are more common, but they can be short and followed by sunshine.
June to November is also Atlantic hurricane season. This doesn’t mean your holiday will necessarily be affected, but weather can be less predictable, particularly during the later summer and autumn months.
POPULAR HOLIDAY AREAS
Where to stay in the Dominican Republic
One of the things I love about the Dominican Republic is the variety. You can spend the entire holiday relaxing at a beautiful beachfront resort, but there is plenty to discover if you want to get out and explore.
Punta Cana is a favourite among UK holidaymakers, known for its beautiful beaches and wide choice of resorts, from affordable all-inclusive stays to luxury five-star and adults-only escapes.
Bávaro is particularly popular for its white-sand beaches, turquoise waters and beachfront resorts.
It’s an excellent choice for families, couples, honeymooners and groups, with plenty of facilities to enjoy without leaving the resort.
Excellence Resorts in Punta Cana: Which One Is Right for You?

LA ROMANA
Beaches, culture & excursions
La Romana is a lovely alternative to Punta Cana and is particularly appealing if you want beautiful beaches with easy access to cultural attractions and excursions.
Nearby Bayahibe is known for its Caribbean waters and is a popular starting point for boat trips to Saona Island.

SANTO DOMINGO
History, culture & city life
If you want to experience more of Dominican history and everyday culture, Santo Domingo deserves a visit.
The capital offers a very different experience from the beach resorts, with historic architecture, museums, restaurants, shopping and nightlife. Its UNESCO-listed Colonial City is one of its biggest attractions.

SAMANA
Nature at its most beautiful
For nature and scenery, Samaná is one of the most beautiful regions of the Dominican Republic. Think lush landscapes, waterfalls, beaches and seasonal humpback whale watching.
It is a wonderful choice for travellers looking for something a little quieter and more nature-focused.

Find Your Perfect Dominican Republic Holiday
Whether you're looking for an all-inclusive family resort, a romantic adults-only escape or a luxury beachfront retreat, there is a Dominican Republic holiday to suit almost every traveller.
All-Inclusive Holidays
All-inclusive is one of the most popular ways to holiday in the Dominican Republic — and the resorts here are particularly good at it.
Many larger resorts have several swimming pools, multiple restaurants and bars, entertainment, sports and activities included within the holiday. Premium properties can feel like destinations in their own right, with everything from waterparks and kids’ clubs to spas, beach clubs and à la carte dining.
Some resorts are also part of larger complexes, which may give guests access to additional restaurants and facilities depending on the room category and hotel.
If you want to know exactly what is included, it’s always worth checking the individual resort rather than assuming every all-inclusive package works in the same way.

Family Holidays
The Dominican Republic is a fantastic choice for families, particularly those who love large resorts with plenty happening throughout the day.
Family-friendly hotels can offer kids’ clubs, teen clubs, splash parks, waterparks, sports, evening entertainment and a wide choice of restaurants. There are also some excellent resorts offering larger family rooms and suites.
Outside the hotel, families can enjoy catamaran trips, snorkelling, wildlife experiences and adventure parks, including Scape Park in the Punta Cana area.
Couples & Adults-Only Holidays
For couples, there is an excellent selection of romantic and adults-only resorts.
You can choose anything from a lively adults-only all-inclusive with entertainment and nightlife to a quieter luxury resort focused on relaxation, fine dining and spa experiences.
Private dinners, swim-up suites, beachfront rooms, sunset cruises and couples’ spa treatments can make the Dominican Republic particularly popular for honeymoons and special occasions.

Luxury Holidays to the Dominican Republic
Luxury in the Dominican Republic can offer surprisingly good value compared with some other Caribbean destinations.
At the top end, expect impressive beachfront settings, beautiful suites, swim-up rooms, private pools, premium restaurants, spas and elevated service.
There is a particularly strong selection of luxury all-inclusive resorts, making the destination a great option if you want five-star surroundings while knowing most of your food, drinks and entertainment are already included in the holiday price.

Find Your Dominican Republic Holiday
From huge family resorts packed with activities to adults-only luxury, honeymoon escapes and beautiful Caribbean beachfront hotels, there is a Dominican Republic holiday for almost every style of traveller.
The biggest challenge can simply be choosing the right resort.
I can help you compare the different areas, hotels, room types and board options and find a holiday that suits your dates, budget and the way you actually like to travel.

Dominican Republic Holiday FAQs
Where is the Dominican Republic?
The Dominican Republic is in the Caribbean and occupies the eastern part of the island of Hispaniola, which it shares with Haiti.
Is the Dominican Republic worth visiting?
Absolutely. Beautiful beaches are one of the main attractions, but the combination of excellent resorts, tropical landscapes, activities, culture and generally strong all-inclusive options makes the Dominican Republic appealing to many different types of traveller.
When is the best time to go?
December to April is particularly popular for warm weather and generally drier conditions. May to November can offer attractive prices, although rainfall is more common and June to November falls within the Atlantic hurricane season.
Where is the best place to stay?
For a classic all-inclusive beach holiday, Punta Cana and Bávaro offer the widest choice of resorts. La Romana and Bayahibe are excellent alternatives, particularly if you want access to excursions such as Saona Island. Samaná is beautiful for nature and scenery, while Santo Domingo is the place to consider if history, culture and city life are higher on your list.
Does the Dominican Republic have good beaches?
Yes — its beaches are one of the biggest reasons people travel here. Expect long stretches of pale sand, palm trees and warm tropical water, particularly around Punta Cana, Bávaro, Bayahibe and Samaná.
Is the Dominican Republic suitable for families?
Yes. There is an enormous selection of family-friendly resorts, including hotels with kids’ clubs, waterparks, splash areas, entertainment and activities for teenagers. Choosing the right hotel makes a big difference, particularly when travelling with older children, as child-age policies and room occupancy rules vary between resorts.
Is the Dominican Republic good for couples?
Very much so. The destination has an impressive selection of adults-only and couples-focused resorts, including luxury all-inclusive hotels, honeymoon suites, swim-up rooms and beachfront accommodation.
Is it good for groups?
Yes. The large resort complexes and variety of room types make the Dominican Republic a popular option for groups, celebrations and multi-generational holidays. For larger parties, it is worth planning early if you want several rooms close together or particular room categories.
How long should I stay?
Seven nights works well if you mainly want a relaxing resort holiday. For long-haul travel from the UK, I often think 10 to 14 nights gives you a better balance, particularly if you want plenty of resort time as well as a few excursions.
Is the Dominican Republic expensive?
It can offer very good value for a Caribbean holiday, particularly when booking an all-inclusive package. Prices vary considerably according to the resort, room category, travel dates and departure airport, with Christmas, Easter and UK school holidays generally commanding higher prices.
How long is the flight from the UK?
A direct flight from London to Punta Cana is approximately nine to ten hours. Flight times vary depending on the route and departure airport.
Do British travellers need a visa for the Dominican Republic?
Entry requirements can change, so I always recommend checking the latest official travel advice before travelling. British tourists can generally visit the Dominican Republic without obtaining a traditional tourist visa in advance for short stays, but current entry requirements and the Dominican Republic’s electronic entry/exit form should be checked before departure.
